Singleness: Purpose in the Waiting ~

“…do not stir up nor awaken love until it pleases.” Song of Solomon 8:4

The Shulamite charges the women to wait for God’s best. She does NOT say, “Go, give your heart, mind, and body to men until you find Mr. Right”. Heartbreak, being taken advantage of, or feeling broken and alone are never God’s intent for His daughters. Therefore, we are commanded to guard our hearts. But, how do we?

First, we give the Lord our hearts; singleness is a time to dedicate ourselves to our First Love and serve the King of our hearts. It is a season to pour our energy, service, and time into eternal revenue. It is a platform to shine brightly and reach those we might otherwise be too preoccupied to reach. It is a time of refining character and deepening devotion. Singleness is a gift. However, at times, it can feel lonely.

Our innate desires to be loved, pursued, and valued can lead us to give in to temptation. But giving ourselves to anyone other than who God has for us will always disappoint and leave a deeper void. Instead of falling prey to lesser things, consider these 3 lessons:

1.     He is the only one who can love, pursue, and value us the way we desire. No human love will ever compare to the Lord’s. His is the only love that will never fail us. Even when married our husbands will never be able to be everything for us. ONLY GOD CAN BE OUR EVERYTHING!

2.     Singleness is a time of preparation. He knows our futures, and in His INFINITE wisdom He is teaching us things now so we will be ready then. Let’s allow God to do the work He knows is necessary before He leads us into new things.

3.     Trust He only wants what is best for us. If we desire to be married, then when it is best for us and if it is best for us, He will give it to us. Psalm 84:11b, “No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”

So, right now if singleness is what is best for us, may we desire for God to use this time for His purposes and know in the waiting, that we have the very best and all we will ever need, Him. That is having purpose in the waiting.

     God bless you! <3
