(Encouraged reading: Proverbs 24)

v. 1-2, 8-9, 15, 19-20, 28-29 The Schemer’s Downfall

“The devising of foolishness is sin...” Proverbs 24:9a

Plotters, manipulators, and schemers contrive underhanded plans that benefit themselves. They have secret agendas and conspire against the righteous. They relish in pay back and revenge. However, the Lord calls their plans abominations; those who scheme will be put out by the Lord.

v. 3-7, 10-14, 16-18, 21-27 The Wise Man’s Favor

“For the righteous may fall seven times and rise again…” Proverbs 24:16a

Solomon tells the righteous and wise not to envy the wicked who are seemingly winning. The wicked do not have the Lord’s favor and will receive the judgement due them. He reminds them God does not look at the outward prosperity, but at the inward worth. He knows who takes pleasure in His wisdom and is bearing fruit. He blesses those who rebuke the wicked and give a right answer.

v. 30-34 The Lazy Man’s Calamity

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest; so shall your poverty come like a prowler, and your need like an armed man.” Proverbs 24:33-34

The lazy man digs his own grave. He neither toils nor works; he wishes to be waited on and believes he will have even if he does nothing. His home is in shambles. His doom is sudden, though his reserves have been depleted over time. His life is a warning to all.

Application:

The “well off” only have momentary pleasure. Schemers may accomplish many of their secret plots, but they are an abomination to the Lord and will not stand, just like the greatest schemer, the Devil. The lazy person does little, going against God’s design from the beginning: for man to work and care for the world He created for them to enjoy. We will only truly prosper when we choose to live wisely for the Lord blesses and bestows favor on the wise.

Prayer:

Lord, help us not to envy those who devise wickedness or who love to do nothing. Remind us they will come to nothing because they do not honor You with the way they live.
