(Encouraged reading: Proverbs 31)

v. 1-9 A Mother’s Advice

King Lemuel authored this chapter; however, he credits the wisdom shared to his mother who counseled him. She cautions against engaging in activity with women that could be destructive to his character, reputation, and life. As leader he has much responsibility, so she warns against consumption of alcohol which could compromise him and impair his decision making. Last, she advises him to be a voice for the voiceless; he was to judge righteously and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

v. 10-24 A Virtuous Woman’s Deeds

“Virtuous” defined by Oxford Languages is “having or showing high moral standards.” King Lemuel’s mother knew a queen must be a woman of high moral standards. His wife was to be productive, generous, a homemaker, and a woman who makes wise investments. A husband can trust a woman of such virtue. He values her insight for the home and even his job. She is prized for her diligent work and improving their home.

v. 25-31 A Virtuous Woman’s Character

She is a woman of godly character. She is strong, courageous, wise, kind, hardworking, and fears the Lord. Her beauty is not merely physical but derived from submitting her heart and life to the Lord. He has made her the essence of loveliness. She is praised by her family for her good deeds because she has made her home a thriving sanctuary. She reaps many blessings because she is a blessing.

Application:

To be a virtuous wife starts with being a virtuous (young) woman. The habits and skills we cultivate now help us grow into that wife. Reread the chapter and reflect on each quality, asking how you measure up. Is this woman too perfect or idealistic? No, remember this chapter is inspired by God, and though His standard is high; it is not unattainable.

Prayer:

Lord, may we cultivate a life of high moral character and may our deeds reflect that as well. We give You our hearts, desires, and wills; conform them to Yours and teach us how to be a virtuous woman. When we fail, remind us of Your grace, mercy, and forgiveness.
