(Encouraged reading: Proverbs 29)

v. 1, 5, 8, 11, 15, 17, 19-20, 22, 24 The Power of Words

Scoffing, flattery, lying, anger, and having no filter are things discouraged. Such speech is led by emotion and lacks self-control. A fool speaks in the heat of the moment; a wise man guards his heart and mind. Rebuke and correction are mentioned favorably, for the Lord Himself chastens those He loves.

Words are powerful; they can affect change. Once spoken though they cannot be taken back, so the speaker must be mindful and a good steward of his words. Responsibility also falls upon the hearer for what he has heard; his responses are his own, and he cannot blame the speaker.

v. 2-4, 6-7, 9-10, 12-14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25-27 The Righteous and Wicked in Power

“An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.” Proverbs 29:27

When the righteous rule the people rejoice, but how do they lead and how does it bring jubilation? A righteous ruler is fair to all, rich or poor. He cares for his people and seeks their well-being. He listens to true and sound counsel. The righteous finds happiness when he finds the law. He cares about those under him as if they were his own. His humble demeanor causes him to retain honor, and yet, he cares more about honoring God than pleasing men. He knows true justice and judgment come from the Lord. The wicked ruler is prideful, self-serving, and biased. He keeps wicked counsel and can only gain the people’s fear, not respect.

Application:

It’s a personal choice to behave in a wicked or righteous manner. How do you treat your parents, siblings, co-workers, or friends? Are you humble or self-righteous? Do you seek the truth and execute fair judgement? Do you care about others and seek their best?

Prayer:

Lord, may we speak and live in a way that honors You. Help us to live with integrity, so when we are placed into positions of leadership, we will continue to glorify you and bless others.
