v. 1-19 The Jews Serve Justice
When the day originally set for the Jews’ annihilation came, it instead became a day of destruction for the enemies of the Jews. 500 men in the citadel of Shushan were destroyed, and Haman’s 10 sons were also killed by the Jewish defense. After that first day, King Ahasuerus asked Esther if she desired anything else. Esther petitioned for another day for the Jews to come together and protect themselves, not because she sought revenge or was seeking the death of others, but because she wanted to make sure that all who sought to harm her people were vanquished. After two days of protecting themselves, the Jews were able to rest.
v . 20-32 The Origin of the Feast of Purim
In remembrance of all that God delivered them from, Mordecai constructed a decree for a new Jewish holiday, Purim, to remember the casted Pur (the lot) that had sought their ruin. The Jews readily accepted the new holiday and rejoiced for two days. Purim is still celebrated today by Jews as they remember God’s protection and faithfulness to them.
Application:
Throughout all of time God has divinely intervened and delivered His people. As Christians, there is comfort knowing we have a God who defends us. We must not forget how powerful the God is that we serve; we must remember when those trials come how strong our God is. He is ALL-powerful, ALL-knowing, and ALL-seeing. When our Deliverer comes in and rescues us, let us be like the Jews who memorialize and celebrate God’s goodness. Is there something God has delivered you through; if so, have you thanked Him for the freedom you now walk in?
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for protecting us. I pray that we would be able to not focus so much on the trial down here, that we forget we have You, the Almighty God of the universe, fighting on our behalf. Psalm 121, “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Thank you, God, for Your faithfulness to us; help us to always thank and praise You for all You do!
