v. 1-7 The Heart of a King
“It is God’s glory that he needs not search into a matter, because he knows it without search; but it is the honour of kings, with a close application of mind, and by all the methods of enquiry, to search out the matters that are brought before them, to take pains in examining offenders, that they may discover their designs and bring to light the hidden works of darkness, not to give judgment hastily or till they have weighed things, nor to leave it wholly to others to examine things, but to see with their own eyes.” (Matthew Henry commentary)
Solomon also gives warning to those under the king. He says the wicked are to be removed if a king is to rule righteously and it is better to humble yourself before a king than to exalt yourself and be humbled by him.
v. 8-10, 17-18, 21-22 The Heart of a Neighbor
A good and wise neighbor seeks to live peaceably with those around him. When a dispute arises, he listens to his neighbor’s account before accusing him. He speaks honorably and honestly about all, never giving a false account. He knows not to overstay his welcome. When his enemy is in need, he extends grace and lends a hand. A good neighbor treats all as he would like to be treated.
v. 11-16, 19-20, 23-28 The Heart of The Wise
The wise live a life that brings blessings, and it overflows onto others. They speak when it is right, and they bestow life to the hearer. They are perceptive. The wise are faithful and trusted messengers. They do not boast about things they have not done. They are disciplined and do not overindulge. A wise man is sensitive and compassionate.
Application:
“Who is my neighbor?” All, and thus, we ought to treat all the same, with respect, honor, and integrity. Being a good neighbor comes from being a wise person. Ask yourself, “How can I be a better neighbor to those around me?”
Prayer:
Lord, we know we are commanded to love others, so help us to love others the way You do and command.
