“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). Last week we learned what a happy man does not do; he does not walk, stand, or sit with the ungodly. This week we learn what he does do. We learn that he delights in God's law; he takes immense pleasure in it, regards it as something valuable, and in turn, reads it most willingly. He does it at all hours, both in the morning and night.

“To meditate in God's word is to discourse with ourselves concerning the great things contained in it, …we must have a constant habitual regard to the word of God as the rule of our actions and the spring of our comforts, and we must have it in our thoughts, accordingly, upon every occasion that occurs...” (Matthew Henry Commentary).

Application:

Ask yourself: “Do I treasure God’s Word above all else?” “Do I purpose to meditate on it anywhere and at any time?” An honest answer, even if no, will prove helpful; God will meet you right where you are. Knowing the Word prepares you for the present and whatever may come.

The Bible tells us that God’s Word is living, powerful, and stronger than any two-edged sword (Hebrew 4:12). The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). When the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, Satan took opportunity to tempt the Lord. Jesus, Himself, wielded the Sword as He recited scripture, and the Devil fled. Jesus demonstrated to us the power of the Word and the necessity to use it to battle the enemy (Matthew 4:1-11). “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for reminding us we need to be in Your Word daily. Teach us what meditating on Your Word looks like in our lives right now and how to at all times of the day. Reveal to us what we need to set aside for precious time with You. Help us to willingly obey You and part from those things, remembering that You have blessings in store for us.
