(Encouraged reading: Proverbs 26)

v. 1, 3-12, 17, 27 How to Treat a Fool

We’ve learned a lot about the fool and his folly, and in this chapter Solomon warns of the things we shouldn’t give a foolish man. A fool is not worthy of honor. He should not be given a message to be passed on, and wise sayings are not appropriate for his tongue.

Though they do not deserve the high respect that honor gives, they still should be respected as they are made in the image of God. If God still cares about them (Solomon points out that it is the Lord that gives them work), then we should care about them, too.

v. 2, 18-26, 28 Impactful Words

Solomon describes how impacting and hurtful our words can be: “like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death”; “as charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire”; “like earthenware covered with silver dross”. “There are seven abominations in his heart”. “A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, and a flattering mouth works ruin.”

v. 13-16 The Lazy Man’s Inaction

The lazy man chooses to do nothing rather than properly care for himself or those around him; it is to his own detriment. However, though he does nothing, he still believes he is wiser and more experienced than others.

Application:

How do you treat those who are foolish? Do you trust them too much? Do you lack respect for them?

Are you prone to cut down others with your words? Do you need to apologize for foolish or harsh words?

We all have our lazy moments or days, but is laziness your lifestyle? Ask God to give you a purpose and passion.

Prayer:

Lord, give us insight into each of these areas. Whether we struggle in one or all areas help us to truly seek You and to be respectful of all people in our thoughts, words, and actions.
