(Encouraged reading: Proverbs 20)

v. 1, 3-4, 6-7, 9-17, 19-25, 27, 29-30 A Life of Integrity

To live with integrity, one must act honorably, be fair in all dealings, do what is pure and right, be careful about what he sees and hears, be a hard worker, not give into idleness, not associate with known talebearers, or gossip himself, be patient and honest. He does not speak idle words nor boast about himself. The knowledge he shares is a precious treasure. He is a man of his word. His life contrasts the wicked; he avoids drunkenness and quarrels and is not hasty or rash. As he matures, he values that which he has gained from life experience and knowing God.

v. 2, 5, 8, 18, 26, 28 A King and His Counsel

For a person to rule or have authority of any kind they need people to assist them, counselors. Solomon addresses the acts of a righteous and wise king, as well as the necessity of having godly counsel. Those subject to a ruler’s decrees, laws, and judgements want to know they are done with thought, purpose, and for the good of all; counselors are vital in conveying additional perspective and insight.

Application:

When God calls us to lead others in any capacity, we must do two things. The first is to live a life of integrity. How do we act? How do we treat our family? What kind of words do we speak? What kind of lifestyle are we cultivating?

The second is to really pray and consider who we receive counsel from. That doesn’t just mean your mentors or parent(s). It also means the people you listen to or follow on social media, the talk shows or podcasts you listen to, the books or magazines you read, and so on. Who or what has a part in shaping the person you are and will become? What kind of person are these sources telling you to be?

Prayer:

Lord, may we live with integrity and heed wise counsel. “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight.” (Psalm 19:14a) May our lives point others to You.
